Advice from Snopes

 Advice From Snopes

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with and/or for determining whether information received via email is just that:  true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Below is their advice for us.
Advice from Snopes.Com

1) Any time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to ’10’ of your friends, sign this petition, or you’ll get bad luck, good luck, or whatever, it almost always has an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and E-Mails of those folks you forward to.
The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of ‘active‘ E-Mails addresses to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to other spammers.

2) Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards.
All it was, and all any of this type of E-Mail is, a way to get names and ‘ cookie‘ tracking information for telemarketers and spammers – – to validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes.

You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the future!

If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of E-Mail, now you know why you get so much SPAM!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(S) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound!

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT in the long run. Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let’s stop making it easy for them!

Also: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other organization
To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition.

Have a great day everyone!

Virus Hoaxes

I’ve seen several posts lately warning friends about potential viruses to beware of.  McAfee provides a list of such viruses that have been determined to be a "hoax" so I thought I would pass the information along in case some of you might find it helpful.

According to McAfee Security Center:

There are a lot of viruses out there. But some aren’t really out there at all. Virus hoaxes are more than mere annoyances, as they may lead some users to routinely ignore all virus warning messages, leaving them vulnerable to a genuine, destructive virus. Next time you receive an urgent virus warning message, be sure to check the list of known virus hoaxes below.

Remember: Never open an email attachment unless you know what it is—even if it’s from someone you know and trust.

Remember that virus writers can use known hoaxes to their advantage. For example, AOL4FREE began as a hoax virus warning. Then somebody distributed a destructive trojan attached to the original hoax virus warning! The lessons are clear: Always remain vigilant and never open a suspicious attachment.

Hello all my wonderful friends!!!

I finally received my new laptop and have spent the last several days getting everything set up.

I have tried to comment on your blogs as I could, but know that I missed many of them.  It would be next to impossible for me to go back and try to get caught up at this point, so I’m going to start fresh…I’m just glad to be back and able to catch up with all you again.

Thank you all for being so understanding in my inability to get to you all…I HAVE MISSED MY FRIENDS…but I’m back to the blogging world again!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll be seeing you around and visiting your spaces to see what’s new with everyone!

I Bit the Bullet

Good morning all my dear and wonderful friends:

Just wanted you all to know that I’ve finally given up on trying to fix my laptop…it is hopeless and I’ve spent enough time trying to convince myself it can be fixed!

So, I "bit the bullet" and ordered a brand new one from Dell that should arrive next week.  I am so looking forward to being able to visit your spaces again and get caught up with all of you.

Thank you for being so patient and for understanding my lack of comments lately.  As much as I hated to give in, I’m excited about the new one.

Computer Virus

I received this from a friend and according to it appears to be true…if anyone knows anything about this, please comment.

Hi all, I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are  gearing up for this virus!
I checked Snopes (URL above:), and it is for real!
Get this email message sent around to your contacts ASAP.
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open  any message with an attachment entitled ‘POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK’,  regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which ‘burns’ the whole hard disc C of your computer.
This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her  contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.
If you receive an email called ‘POSTCARD,’ even though sent  to you by a friend, do not open it!
Shut down your computer immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the  most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply  destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc where the vital information is kept.

Just wanted to pass this along…just in case!
